Weekly Updates
This week, our Lower School all-stars learned about things that float, built a blizzard in a jar, practiced letters and words, and developed classroom readiness skills. They used fun materials in novel ways, and worked on building friendships during group activities. Preparations are underway for the Lower School Olympic Games, slated for Leap Day 2024.
Upper School is back in full swing this week, as teachers developed children’s use of non-fiction texts, stoked their interest in the economy and the value of financial literacy, and encouraged students to nourish their mindfulness and self-care routines. Celebrations broke out for the hundredth day of school, but that didn’t stop lessons on advanced used of fractions, citing text-based evidence, and proper sentence structure.
MLK Day Celebration
This week, our students celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Our “littles” listened to a read aloud about Dr. King, and followed it up by sharing their dreams with their classmates. In First Grade, students discussed King’s accomplishments and achievements, and used inspiration from MLK Jr. to write their own hopes and dreams. Our Intermediate students dissected the famous “I Have a Dream Speech”, and used it as an opportunity to make inferences and learn new vocabulary
Dealing With the Cold
- Dress in Layers: Having fun in the cold is all about giving your child layers they can take off or put on as the day goes on.
- Push Hydration: It’s important to encourage your child to drink water- even though they may not feel hot, water throughout the day still plays an important role in their health.
- Mix Indoor and Outdoor Activities: When it’s frosty or freezing out, make sure to intentionally plan both indoor and outdoor activities for your child, to help regulate temperature and energy throughout the day.
- Consider Vaccinations: Lower temperatures make it easier for children to catch and transmit viruses- consider vaccinating your child against common illness to prevent infection and spread.
- Sunscreen if Needed: If your child’s skin burns easily, remember to apply sunscreen- even in the cold, without protection, a day spent playing in the sun can still leave your child with a sunburn.
