The Burrow is an outdoor learning program designed to integrate classroom learning into the natural environment. The program’s name was inspired by our owl mascot and takes its name from the burrowing owl, a native Florida species known for nesting in underground burrows and thriving through curiosity, adaptability, and stewardship of its habitat. Like the burrowing owl, students are encouraged to explore, observe, and develop a strong connection to the natural world around them. By connecting grade-level academic standards with hands-on outdoor experiences, The Burrow helps students make meaningful connections between concepts learned in the classroom and the world around them. Through inquiry, exploration, and observation, students engage in authentic learning that fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of core subjects.

The program aligns outdoor lessons with grade-specific learning standards across disciplines, including science, mathematics, language arts, social studies, and the arts. Whether students are investigating ecosystems, measuring plant growth, writing nature journals, or exploring patterns in the environment, each experience is intentionally connected to classroom instruction and academic goals.

The Burrow also develops and maintains dedicated outdoor learning spaces that teachers can easily access throughout the school day. These spaces are designed to become natural extensions of the classroom, making it simple for educators to incorporate outdoor learning into their regular instruction. By creating welcoming, functional environments for teaching and exploration, the program encourages students to engage with nature as a routine part of their educational experience rather than an occasional field trip.

A central component of The Burrow is student stewardship. Students actively participate in maintaining, improving, and expanding the outdoor learning spaces throughout the year.
