Lower School Highlights
Project Recycled Runway was a smashing success- the kids looked amazing and everyone seemed to really enjoy showing off all their hard work. The fun didn’t stop there though, as kids spent the week planting seeds and flowers, learning around birds, observing their chrysalises, and going on a scavenger hunt for clouds, flowers, caterpillars, and more. Classes also recycled broken crayons and made them into new ones, and conducted experiments to investigate the buoyancy of different objects. Last but not least, we held our very own Disney Party, complete with costumes, painting castles and crowns, decorations, and a dance party.

The Importance of Fine Motor Skills in Preschool
Developing fine motor skills in preschool-aged children is important as it lays the foundation for critical tasks they will encounter in their academic development and everyday life. These skills involve the coordination and control of the small muscles in the hands and fingers, enabling children to perform activities like writing, drawing, buttoning clothes, using utensils, and more.
Here are 7 ways Early Advantage helps encourage a child’s development of fine motor skills.
Playdough Creations
Art Projects
Cutting with Safety Scissors
Sensory Table Play Time
Allowing Children to Dress Themselves
Building with Blocks
Coordinated Play Time
Upper School Highlights
Students in Upper School spent Earth Day working together to add new scenic life to our campus. Weeds were pulled, flowers were planted, and a new appreciation for the natural beauty of our school was shared. Also, we saw students painting and contributing bird houses for our TimberNook bird families, and releasing butterflies back into the environment. Much work went into planning today’s EPCOT field trip, and we can’t wait to hear and share all about it.
EMPLOYEE EXCELLENCE
Tessa Grootenhuis
After finishing her degree in Child Life, Tessa joined the Collage team in 2022, and immediately felt she was right where she belonged. “I think the flexibility in scheduling and weekly opportunities for naturalistic learning are just incredible,” she says. She continues, “The kids are engaged in all these different mini organic learning environments as the day unfolds.” Speaking to the growth she’s seen in her kids, she explains, “I try to organize my classroom by leading with respect for how young the children are- their minds and bodies are being exposed to so many things for the first time, they need patience and understanding that they’re going to learn in their own way, at their own pace.” She adds, “Over the course of the year, I’ve seen them go from being shy and focusing mostly on themselves, to opening up, caring about each other, and valuing each other’s friendship.” Into her classroom, Tessa brings her naturally easygoing personality, along with her engaging enthusiasm for working with children. She talks about finding appreciation in the relationships she’s formed with her co-workers and families, and we feel the same- you’re a truly invaluable team member, Tessa, and we couldn’t be happier you’re here. |

Curriculum Corner: Final PBL Unit!
Next month, our students will be working on their final Project Based Learning unit, which centers around the “Exploration of interests and passions that inspire learning and action.” Students will have the opportunity to identify and explore a real-life issue that resonates with them, allowing them to pursue their personal interests and passions in a culminating project. Through this process, students can develop self-management, research, communication, and critical thinking skills. We can’t wait to see and hear about our students’ accomplishments with this inspiring unit! Be on the lookout for more details from your child’s teacher.

Staying Healthy with Nurse Chelsea
Hydration is crucial, especially during warmer months when the risk of dehydration increases. Here are some hydration recommendations for parents:
Water as the Primary Beverage: Encourage your children to drink water regularly throughout the day. It’s the best way to stay hydrated without any added sugars or calories.
Offer Fruits and Vegetables: Many fruits and vegetables have high water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and strawberries. Incorporate these into snacks and meals to increase hydration.
Limit Sugary Drinks: Avoid sugary beverages like soda, fruit juices, and sports drinks. While they might be tempting, they can contribute to dehydration and are often packed with unnecessary calories.
Use Hydration Reminders: Especially for younger children, it can be helpful to set reminders or make it a routine to drink water throughout the day. This can be through a timer, a water bottle with markers for how much to drink by certain times, or simply prompting them to take a sip regularly.
Encourage Drinking Before and After Physical Activity: Before heading out for outdoor activities or playtime, encourage your children to drink water. Also, remind them to rehydrate afterward to replenish fluids lost through sweat.
Lead by Example: Children often mimic the behavior of their parents, so make sure you’re setting a good example by staying hydrated yourself. Drink water regularly and make it a habit for the whole family.
Watch for Signs of Dehydration: Teach your children the signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, and dark urine. Encourage them to speak up if they’re feeling unwell, and take appropriate action if you notice any symptoms.
Bring Water Everywhere: Whether it’s a day at the park, a trip to the beach, or a family outing, always bring water bottles along. Having water readily available makes it easier for children to stay hydrated.
Consider Electrolyte Replacement: If your child is engaging in prolonged physical activity, consider providing electrolyte replacement drinks or snacks to help maintain proper electrolyte balance.
Monitor Fluid Intake: Keep an eye on how much your child is drinking throughout the day, especially during hot weather or when they’re active. Make sure they’re getting enough fluids to stay properly hydrated.
By following these recommendations, parents can help ensure that their children stay hydrated and healthy, especially during the warmer months.
