The rain this week didn’t hold any of the students back from embracing their Reggio and STEAM activities full force! The Wednesday Field Day proved to be a highlight of the week for the students (and many parents too!).

    Making Dinosaurs

Ms. Tina’s three-year-old class made dinosaurs out of cardstock and paint. Using a dinosaur shaped template, dinosaur shapes were cut out of cardstock. Students’ used their fingers to mix and apply the green, white, and brown paint. The prehistoric paintings were dino-myte!

    Painting the Zoo

Ms. Sharon’s three-year-old class went wild…talking about zoo animals! The class animals that can be found in zoos, where they come from in the wild, what food they eat and more. Students pretended to be zookeepers and zoo veterinarians at the block center, building cages for stuffed animals. Students created their own panda, tiger, giraffe or lion using paint, a marker, and cut pieces of construction paper. In lieu of a paintbrush, students used a fork for added creativity.

    Ocean Slime

Ms. Amanda’s VPK class focused on oceans this week. Students made blue and green slime, making sure to carefully measure out all of their ingredients. The ingredients that proved to be the “icing on the cake” so to speak were the blue and green food coloring and sparkly glitter. The class enjoyed seeing the change from the individual ingredients to the ingredients reacting as they became mixed together.

    Nature Activities

Ms. Donna’s VPK class took to the trails behind the school for Reggio Thursday. Trees trunks were wrapped in white butcher paper. The students painted pictures on the tree trunk canvases using twigs, sticks, pine needles, pinecones, and any other forest “brushes” within arms reach.

The class transitioned their attention from painting to planting. Students planted sunflower seeds around the campus. We can’t wait to see their beautiful sunflowers bloom!

    Sizing Up Seashells

Ms. Shari’s VPK class put their measuring and sorting skills to the test. Students were given a variety of seashells. Using a tape measurer, students measured the size of each shell and placed them in size order smallest to largest. Some of the shells were very close in size so students were encouraged to measure to the nearest ½ inch increment to differentiate. The class also measured the total length of all shells lined up.

    Seashell Art

For Reggio Thursday, the class used magnifying glasses to get a closer look at more seashells. We will use magnifying glasses to look up close at some seashells. We will see some our shiny, others are matte, some are smooth while others are bumpy. Students will use liquid watercolor to paint seashells creating some very original works of art.

    Nature Journals

Ms. Buss and Ms. Currie’s kindergarten classes have been keeping nature journals. Students have been recording their observations about campus flora and fauna.

    Butterfly Garden

Ms. Silimona’s VPK class visited the butterfly garden this week! Inspired by the winged creatures, students created their own butterflies by organizing small white rocks into a butterfly shape.

    Wednesday Field Day!

The Wednesday Field Day was a success. When asked about field day, VPK student Elias said, “Best. Day. EVER!” In the morning, the preschool classes enjoyed their activities in the sun. Despite the rain in the afternoon, the upper elementary school students followed Life Guard rules, no lightning and no thunder, no problem! The upper elementary school students had a blast on their rain soaked field day obstacle course, even some students participating barefoot.
