As we get closer to Valentines Day, students are showing their love of learning through exciting STEM and Reggio activities!

    National Children’s Dental Health Month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and the three-year-old class had a timely introduction to the topic. Students discussed how many teeth we have, healthy habits, and role played a visit to the dentist office. Students used pipe cleaners to floss play-doh cubes in ice trays. The students even flossed the whole class! Using jump ropes as floss, the students acted as giant teeth to practice healthy habits.

    Cupid’s Constructors

The VPK classes took on the role of Cupid’s construction workers, testing out the strength of candy hearts to build bridges and walls. For this STEM activity, each student was given an index card and two plastic cups to build a strong bridge that could hold the most candy hearts. In groups, students worked together to design and build the tallest walls of candy hearts, a labor of love.

    Sink or Float?

The Kindergarten classes collected a wide variety of items from nature such as sand, leaves, seedpods, bark and mulch. Students predicted and tested which items would float. Students had success predicting the buoyancy of bark as their particular bark specimen floated to the top!

    Light or Heavy?

In honor of Collage Day School, our students enjoyed demonstrating their knowledge through the art form of collage. This week, VPK students highlighted the letter “o” by creating collages of the letter using a variety of circular objects.

    Reggio: Balancing FUN

During a nature based math activity, students collected natural found objects from the courtyard and placed them in the category of light or heavy after weighing them on a scale. Math language is encouraged every day in our preschool classrooms.

    Reggio: Letter ‘O’ Art

The Kindergarten class made mathematic connections during a numbers scavenger hunt: Find 3 leaves, 6 rocks, and 2 seed pods or acorns. The students had a fun time using their scavenger hunt pieces to demonstrate numbers and matching groups!
