Welcoming Our New Gardening Resource Teacher!

November 27, 2017

Welcome, Laurie Simmer, our new Garden Resource Teacher! We are so excited to be the first school to offer a gardening class to its students because it has so many benefits for children. It develops STEM & analytical abilities, improves focus & memory, relieves stress, builds a sense confidence and encourages healthy eating.

A Note from Laurie…
“I was raised on a vegetable farm in New York by parents that were both teachers, and I’ve always treasured my time in classrooms and the outdoors. Joining the team at Collage as the Garden Resource Teacher combines my passions of learning with young people and caring for our natural environments.

At Collage I hope to share the knowledge I’ve gained from my undergraduate degree, Ornamental Horticulture and Environmental Design, from Delaware Valley University in Pennsylvania, my masters work at the University of Delaware where I earned a Fellowship from Longwood Gardens to study Public Horticulture Administration, and my 7 years as a 4-H Youth Development Program Coordinator
and Educator with both Cornell University and the University of Florida.

Since moving to Ponte Vedra 12 years ago I have had the pleasure of volunteering with the St. Johns County School District and the Ribault Garden Club’s Education Coordinator to provide hands-on gardening experiences to young people in the area. I also have a passion for the work the 4-H Youth Development Program offers to youth and adults, and I am currently the chairperson of the county’s 4-H Association as well as a volunteer 4-H Club Leader.

My husband and daughters indulge my obsession with the outdoors both in our own backyard, local habitats, across the country, and across the world by running, hiking, camping and generally exploring each new and familiar place together.

I look forward to learning from each and every student at Collage Day School and growing fabulous gardens together!”
